The MACS Program provides farmers, agricultural landowners, and small-scale equine and livestock operations with cost-share grants to cover up to 100 percent of the cost to install conservation measures known as best management practices (BMPs) on their farms. These practices prevent soil erosion, manage nutrients, and safeguard water quality in streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay. More than 40 eligible BMPs include grassed waterways, streamside buffers of grasses and trees, animal manure management systems, animal waste storage facilities, spring developments, cover crops, stream protection practices, conservation cover, nutrient management services, and many other practices.
