Maryland's Conservation Buffer Initiative
Up to $330 per award
About this opportunity
Provides farmers and landowners with incentive payments to plant streamside buffers on farmland to improve the health of local streams and the Chesapeake Bay. Three types of buffers are eligible: forest buffers planted next to waterways, grass buffers planted next to waterways or field ditches, and watercourse access control areas adjacent to pastures. Contracts run for 5 or 10 years. New riparian forest buffers qualify for a one-time bonus payment per acre. Local soil conservation districts provide free technical assistance. Applications are accepted during an annual open enrollment period (November 1 through April 30).
