Authorized by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) of 2022, the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (Byrne SCIP/BSCI) provides states with formula-based federal funding to implement firearm violence reduction strategies at the intersections of behavioral health and domestic violence. Funded activities include extreme risk protection order (ERPO) programs that temporarily remove guns from individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others, mental health courts, drug courts, veteran treatment courts, behavioral health deflection programs, law enforcement gun storage and tracking initiatives, and related training and public awareness initiatives.
