MARBIDCO, in partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), offers subsidized loan financing to commercial watermen and entrepreneurs who want to start or expand shellfish aquaculture operations in Maryland's Chesapeake and Coastal Bays. The program provides low-interest loans with principal forgiveness provisions to new and existing shellfish aquaculture businesses. First-time borrowers receive 40% principal forgiveness and existing borrowers in good standing receive 25% principal forgiveness. The University of Maryland and the Maryland Department of Agriculture also contribute training and business planning assistance to current and prospective shellfish growers.
